Ongoing Projects

I am currently working on a book manuscript, titled Democracy’s Unfinished Business. The book brings together key themes from my previous publications on the party. Exploring party democracy in India (1950s-1980s) from a historical and normative perspective, it explores how the party system can be reformed in the pursuit of important democratic goals.

The book advances a generalisable normative argument about party reform but focuses on the historical and normative context of Indian democracy. It sheds light on early critics of India’s party finance system, anti-defection legislation, and intra-party distribution of power, using their perspectives as building blocks.

In addition to my book, I am working as a co-investigator for the PACT (Pluralist Agreement and Constitutional Transformation) Project. PACT is a major research project funded by the Arts & Humanities Research Council, UK. As part of this project, I am helping develop a timeline that allows for the tracing of the development of every article in the Indian constitution. My work with PACT also involves new research on Indian political thought and the constitution-making process. Watch this space and PACT’s website for more on this.
